History of the Faculty of Medicine, Siam University
The Faculty of Medicine, Siam University was founded by a group of doctors with high lecturing experience in the country’s leading medical schools and great success in medical profession. They have directly experienced a critical shortage of medical professionals in both public and private sectors, especially when Thailand officially became a part of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. When the AEC materializes, skilled labors are able to flow freely across the region, leading to higher demand for medical services. The government thus has to prepare a sufficient number of capable medical personnel to cover all regions. As a higher education institution, Siam University was aware of the participation in solving this problem and developing the country. It has been determined to develop quality personnel for a long time. In the beginning, Dr. Boon Wanasin supported the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, Siam University in terms of human resources, buildings, and educational supports. Furthermore, Dr. Boon Wanasin also established the Faculty of Medicine Foundation, Siam University.
Requesting to open the Doctor of Medicine program
- Prepared the opening of the Doctor of Medicine program
Associate Professor Dr. Saowanee Rattanapanee (Former Vice President for Academic Affairs Suranaree University of Technology) and Mrs. Suchit Muangkasem (Deputy Director of Medical Affairs Thonburi Hospital) were given by Dr. Boon Wanasin to determine the possibility of applying for the opening of a Doctor of Medicine program since October 2009.
- Submitted the request to the Siam University Council to launch of the Doctor of Medicine Program.
Associate Professor Dr. Saowanee Rattanapanee and Mrs. Suchit Muangkasem prepared a concept paper for approval to open the Doctor of Medicine program to the Siam University Council by coordinating with Assistant Professor Dr. Nimnuan Srijad, Vice President for Academic Affairs Siam University. It was approved in the meeting No. 1/2010 on Wednesday 17 February 2010. In this event, it also established the Committee to specifically consider this issue. “Therefore, February 17 of every year is the day of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine, Siam University”.
- Appoint the committee to consider the opening of the Doctor of Medicine program
The Council of Siam University appointed the committee to consider the opening of the Doctor of Medicine program in the meeting No. 1/2010 on Wednesday 17 February 2010 as follows.

The committee was assigned to consider the opening of the Doctor of Medicine program and has a duty to regulate the maintenance of academic standards followed the Undergraduate Program Standards B.E. 2548 according to the Ministry of Education’s announcement and standard criteria for medical practitioners of The Medical Council of Thailand.
Then the faculty proposes a course to be launched for approval from the University Council under section 34(6) of the Private Institution of Higher Education Act, B.E. 2546 (No.2, B.E. 2550) as announced by Professor Emeritus Dr. Kasem Wattanachai, President of the Council of Siam University on February 22, 2010. The committee considered the opening of the Doctor of Medicine program had the first meeting 1/2010 on February 24, 2010.
3.1 Developed the Doctor of Medicine program
Associate Professor Dr. Saowanee Rattanapanee, the committee and secretary and curriculum drafting committee conducted the Doctor of Medicine curriculum, 2012 under the guidance of Professor Emeritus Dr. Chaloem Varavithya.
3.2 Coordinated with external agencies in accordance with the criteria for the opening of the course of the Medical Council of Thailand
Mrs. Sudchit Mueangkasem, the committee and assistant secretary, coordinated with various hospitals to be the main hospitals, mentoring institute and the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine Foundation.
The main institute of co-production of doctors: The signing of Memorandum of Understanding to launch a program of cooperation in the production of doctors as follows.
Police General Hospital and Siam University
The memorandum of agreement on the cooperation in the production of doctors between the Police General Hospital and Siam University was signed by Lt. Gen. Jongjate Aojanphong, Chief Medical Officer (SorBor 8) Police General Hospital with Dr. Pornchai Mongkolvanich, President of Siam University on August 19, 2010. Later, Chief Medical Officer of Police Hospital informed through the meeting of the Medical Council that was unable to accept medical students for the 4th year at the Police General Hospital in May 2016 (academic year 2016).
Ministry of Public Health and Siam University
Since the first batch of medical students studied in the Faculty of Medicine could not enroll the program of the 4th year at the Police General Hospital in May 2016 (academic year 2016). Therefore, Faculty of Medicine consulted with Dr. Wirun Pornpatkul, Director of Phranangklao Hospital at that time, resulted in a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in being an internship between Siam University and the Ministry of Public Health on April 20, 2016 by Dr. Pornchai Mongkolvanich, President of Siam University and Dr. Sophon Methon, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health. As a result, the 4th year medical students could study and practice at the Phranangklao Hospital in May 2016 onwards.
Subsequently, the memorandum of agreement was updated regarding the cooperation in being a practice agency work between Siam University and the Ministry of Public Health was signed by Air Chief Marshal Chalit Phukphasuk, President of the Siam University Council with Dr. Sophon Methon, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health on August 29, 2017 at the Privy Council House.
Mentoring institute
Phramongkutklao College of Medicine
Associate Professor Dr. Chookiat Asavanich, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, met Lt. Gen. Sahachat Pipitkul, Chief of the Royal Thai Army Medical Department in order to cooperate Phramongkutklao College of Medicine as the mentoring institute for the Faculty of Medicine, Siam University.
Lieutenant General Sahachat Phipitkul, Chief Medical Officer of the Royal Thai Army, made a military memorandum (General Prayut Chan-ocha) requesting approval from Phramongkutklao College of Medicine as a the mentoring institution on November 26, 2010 and was approved by the Royal Thai Army on January 27, 2011.
Faculty of Medicine Foundation Siam University
Dr. Boon Wanasin, President of Thonburi Hospital Public Company Limited, is the founder of the foundation, Faculty of Medicine Siam University according to the certificate of registration of the foundation Registration No. KorThor 2246, given on October 17, 2012.
- Approval of the Doctor of Medicine program, B.E. 2555
The Board of Siam University Council approved the Doctor of Medicine program (new program 2012) on March 14, 2012.
The Medical Council of Thailand Committee at the meeting No. 7/2012 on July 12, 2012 approved the Doctor of Medicine Program (new curriculum program 2012)
The Medical Council has a letter No. Por Sor 017/777 on August 17, 2012 informing the results of the course certification process. Doctor of Medicine, a new program of 2012, has lunch to 48 students considered as the second private university in Thailand to be approved by the Medical Council of Thailand.
- Certified the Doctor of Medicine program (New curriculum 2012) by The Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC)
The Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC) certified the approval of the curriculum Medicine program, Siam University on May 1, 2013.
- Accepted the first batch of medical students in the academic year 2013 by direct admission
Since the Office of the Higher Education Commission certified of medical course on 1 May 2013, the Faculty of Medicine was unable to receive the documents in time for the admission of medical students through the Consortium of Thai Medical Schools (COTMES) system. The Faculty of Medicine announced the application for the general public who were interested in applying for admission. In the first batch of medicine students, Faculty of Medicine by direct admission in total of 48 students. The first semester was started in August 2013, academic year 2013, which was the opening and closing of the semester followed ASEAN countries. Teaching was conducted at Siam University and organized by Associate Professor Dr. Chukiat Ussawanich as the acting dean, Professor Emeritus Dr. Chaloem Varavithya and Professor Emeritus Dr. Amorn Leelarusmee as advisors.
